Are Acupuncture Treatments Spreading Disease?

In the realm of Natural Fertility Treatments, Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture practitioners claim that acupuncture treatments can increase fertility and also increase the effectiveness of IVF treatments. So far, not enough clinical studies have been done on acupuncture treatments alone, not combined with IVF, to be able to render any conclusions about efficacy. Even so, acupuncture is rapidly becoming the alternative treatment of choice for infertility. But experts are warning that acupuncture may actually be spreading communicable diseases. A group of experts from Hong Kong University are now calling for greater regulation of the Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine industry, including the introduction of strict standards of hygiene, in an effort to halt the spread of serious communicable diseases. Professor Patrick Woo and colleagues published their findings in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), pointing out that over 80 people are thought to have contracted Hepatitis B from Acupuncture treatments since 1970.

Professor Woo and his colleagues have also warned that these figures are likely just the tip of the iceberg because it’s very difficult to track the exact origins of these infections. They also warn that infections such as Hepatitis C and HIV could also be transmitted through acupuncture treatments.  Much of the problem could stem from the Chinese tradition of keeping permanent needles in an alcohol solution which doesn’t protect against some of the many types of viruses. During an acupuncture treatment, the needles are inserted up to several inches below the surface of the skin, and can actually drive bacteria and viruses from the skin level more deeply into the body. Therefore it is very important to also ensure that the patient’s skin is sterile before inserting the needles.

The most commonly spread infections are usually bacterial and while many patients recover easily, between five and ten per cent of patients may suffer from serious problems, which can include paralysis, multi-organ failure, joint destruction, and even flesh eating bacteria

Other sources of infection can be the cotton swabs and towels used during an acupuncture treatment. Treatment beds and linens should also be sanitized or sterilized between patients, and acupuncturists should ensure their hands are thoroughly washed between patients. Professor Woo also warned “To prevent infections transmitted by acupuncture, infection control measures should be implemented, such as use of disposable needles, skin disinfection procedures, and aseptic techniques. The Government is currently reviewing responses to a public consultation that it held on the matter and is considering regulating alternative and complementary medicine therapies such as acupuncture to ensure that the public is protected against the spread of infectious diseases.

So I decided to do acupuncture could not hurt, why not. Has anyone done this and it worked Taxes? The place i found is a clinical acupuncture and herbal medicine that would make drugs based on Chinese herbs. This place is. . . Acupuncture for infertility / fertility man from SERM, the poor egg quality, IVF / IUI, hormonal imbalance, age, etcVoy in cycles of infertility who have lost I went to the doc mucho.Yo clomid is about to come back on Clomid, etc. So I was reading acupuncture and herbs, and I thought I’d give it a shot, have a story they like to read? GraciasTTC almost 7 years!

clomid didn’t work for me. sad. my progesterone after 100mg was only 1.

before i get shipped off to a specialist, I am thinking of exploring eastern medicine.

anyone try this route? was it successful?

I am also considering vitex or fertility blend from GNC. But intersted in accupuncture first.
